Goodbye Napa

2.5 years ago Napa was the first bear to move into the newly opened Arosa Bear Sanctuary. Before moving in, he lived in terrible conditions in a cage that was far too small in the now closed Corona Circus in Serbia. In 2016, FOUR PAWS took him out and temporarily moved him to a zoo. Then, finally, in summer 2018 Napa was able to start his journey into a new life and was brought to Arosa. He settled in quickly and adopted more and more, a natural behaviour. He learnt what grass, earth and trees are, how to run down a slope, what foraging means and what snow feels like. In 2019, former restaurant bears Meimo and Amelia moved in and Napa shared the nearly 3-hectare natural enclosure with them.

Napa was then diagnosed with epilepsy in June this year. Despite medical treatment and loving care, and although he seemed to have recovered a bit in the meantime, his quality of life was significantly reduced and the prognosis for long-term improvement did not look good. The analysis of the responsible veterinarians and the caretakers showed that Napa was suffering and that further treatment was unlikely to be successful. So it was with a heavy heart that it was decided to put Napa out of its suffering.
